A message of support for our US trans siblings

While Trans Haven tries to remain neutral on political topics, sometimes it is important to speak up, such as the Russian/Ukrainian war or the genocide in Gaza. Today is such a day!

Trans Haven is saddened to see the unfortunate US election results and stands with our US trans siblings as well as the wider LGBT+ community acrosse the pond.

From all that we have heard during ralley's and interviews of Mr. Trump, we understand how frightening this election outcome is and how dire some of your situations now are. A quick look at Google Trends, which shows search behaviours, it is very clear to how desperate the LGBTQ+ community currently is. Searches such as "how to leave the US", "leaving the US" "lgbt rights", and "trans rights" have spiked in the US today, while they were previously fairly consistant.

This is the graph from the last 30 days versus the graph of the past 24 hours:

While there have been no contacts with Trans Haven in regards to leaving the US since the website has been established, within the past half year, several trans people from the US have reached out to Trans Haven with questions surrounding relocation to Ireland.

Worries about the political situation for trans people in the US, their right to medical care, and the very existential right to be out and seen as a person that exists in the world, have been at the forefront during this time. The basic fear of having to return to the closet during a second term under Mr. Trump has been received loud and clear. For some people, having been out for years, the idea of no longer receiving the care they need and possibly being forced back into the closet is not an option and may lead to serious harm to the individual as well as the community as a whole.

At Trans Haven you are seen and heard and we stand by your side!

For those of you who wish to relocate, please check this page.

The page will be improved with specific information for US trans people, to ensure you have as much information as possible, all in one place.

If you chose to remain in the US, which is also understandable, please put your physical and mental health and safety first. Your safety during the coming four years is the top priority!

Whether you stay in the US or you wish to leave, here are a few improtant points too keep in mind:

  • Stay informed: Know your rights, keep an eye on policy changes, use reputable news sources.

  • Build community: Get in touch with local LGBT+ organisations, find allies, go to local community meetings, build a support network.

  • Improve your digital safety: Limit what information you share online, use safety and privacy tools (e.g. VPN), be aware of digital surveillance.

  • Have an emergency plan ready: Make a list of emergency contacts, safe people and places, create a go-bag in case you need to leave fast, research all safe community organisations that can help in an emergency. If you can, set aside a bit of money.

  • Focus on physical and mental health: Try to get any HRT medications in time, be mindful of yourself, watch out for burnout, seek therapy if needed and possible, strengthen family bonds (blood or chosen).

  • If you are leaving the US: Pack all the essentials (ID, meds, etc), double and triple check your travel plans, ensure your immigration status / visa application / etc, consult with an immigration attorney if you can, get your pets vaccinated if needed for immigration.
